  Days 6&7: Hiking, Prague and relaxation

  On the weekend, the academic programme was put on hold and while some of the participants went to visit the most beautiful among all cities - Prague - a bigger part of the group stayed in the mountains and were discovering the gorgeous Krkonoše national park, which surrounds us for the two weeks. To those who climbed the highest peak Sněžka (1603 m), a tribute should be paid. Sunday was aptly a day of rest and preparations for the second week of the course. more

  Day 5: European democracy, The EU’s judicial system and fundamental rights

  Friday was dedicated entirely to Jan Komarek and the general course. Students discussed the challenges posed by current developments in the world to the European democracy, judicial system and fundamental rights. more

  Day 4: National parliaments, European identity and citizenship in Europe

  Jan continued with his general course, this time on the topic of national parliaments and citizens initiative. Jan contrasted the domestic processes and the processes on the EU level to show how powers are conferred and divided on both levels and to pinpoint certain neuralgic points of democracy in the EU. more

  Day 3: The EU as a post-national project, the balance of powers in the EU and an afternoon discussion #1

  Paul Linden-Retek talked in the morning about the EU as a post-national project and about constitutions in this post-national context. This topic was a great transition from Jan Komarek’s earlier lecture about Chris Bickerton’s book From Nation-State to Member State. Jonathan White’s focus was then on the ballance of political powers within the EU and his main claim was that the EU lacks a classical opposition. more

  Day 2: Informal governance in the EU and the EU as a model

  First guest lecturer Mareike Kleine from the LSE was talking about the informal governance in the EU. She elaborated on the political and diplomatic processes which go beyond the legal rules and since the vast majority of the participants are lawyers, this was a great departing point for a really heated debate. more

  Day 1: Start of the general course and the crisis #1 - Brexit

  Day one, as well as the whole programme of the course, started with two morning lectures of Jan Komárek about the nature of the EU legal order and about the role of the Member States in the integration process and the current crises. Students were deeply engaged in the discussion and Jan was sweating under the pressure of all the challenging questions. more

  Day 0: Arrivals and the EURO 2016 final

  All the participants arrived to the chalet according to the plan on Sunday 10 July. After a common dinner and a welcome by the organisers, students of the summer school had the opportunity to spend a nice first evening watching the UEFA Euro 2016 final and getting to know each other over a glass of famous Czech beer or wine. more
