It is our pleasure to introduce academic director and lecturer of Law and Legal Skills Summer School 2019, Dr. Ciarán Burke, LL.M.
Ciarán Burke is Professor of International Law and Director of the Law and Language Centre at the Friedrich Schiller University, Jena, Germany. He is the former Director of Research at the Law Reform Commission of Ireland, and works as a freelance legal consultant on issues of public international law, European Union law, and human rights law.
Born in Dublin, Ireland, Professor Burke studied at University College, Dublin (BCL), the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam (LL.M), and the European University Institute in Florence (LL.M; Ph.D.), with further studies at the Université des Sciences-Sociales Toulouse-I and Université Robert Schuman, Strasbourg.
Appointed in 2014 as the youngest professor in Jena since the fall of the Berlin Wall, Professor Burke previously worked as a lecturer and moot court coach at the University of Passau, and the Brussels School of International Studies. Professor Burke is the former managing editor of the European Journal of Legal Studies. His areas of interest include various aspects of public international law, international human rights law, European Union law, comparative constitutional and private law, general principles of law, equity, Arctic regulation, migration and legal theory.
