Marja-Liisa Öberg is Associate Professor (docent) of EU law at Lund University and a Director of the Master’s programme in European Business Law. She holds a PhD from the European University Institute, Master’s degrees (LL.M) from the European University Institute and Utrecht University, and an undergraduate law degree (BA) from the University of Tartu.

Marja-Liisa’s main fields of research are EU internal market, external relations and constitutional law, including EU institutional law and EU’s external governance, as well as the law of treaties and international organisations. Her particular research interest lies in studying EU integration in border areas widely conceived. Her current focus of research is on multi-disciplinary dimensions of EU integration in internal and external settings and follows two main strands: (1) the concept of the internal market and its ‘exportability’, and (2) the multitude of ‘boundaries’ in EU integration, including in the context of family law, cross-border regions and external relations.

Marja-Liisa is a Member of the Steering Committee of the Swedish Network for European Legal Studies (SNELS). Her research has been presented at international conferences across Europe and published in leading international venues: a monograph with Cambridge University Press, articles in European Public Law and Legal Issues of Economic Integration and chapters in edited volumes published with Hart Publishing, Edward Elgar and T.M.C. Asser Press.

Marja-Liisa’s most recent research project ‘Conceptualising Cross-Border Regions in the European Union's Legal Order: From Covidfencing to Constitutionalisation’ is funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond.
